Coordinator of Athletic Medicine
Mike, a native of Sanford, MI is a Certified Athletic Trainer and the Coordinator of Sports Medicine at Hackley Hospital. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Central Michigan University in 1985, with a major in Sports Medicine and a minor in Exercise Science. He went on to Northern Illinois University where he earned a Master of Science degree in Education, with an emphasis in Sport Management. Mike became the Assistant Athletic Trainer at Northern Illinois in 1988, and was promoted to Head Athletic Trainer in 1991. In 1994, after 7 years at NIU, Mike left the collegiate setting to join Hackley.
As the Coordinator of Athletic Medicine, Mike is responsible for the Athletic Medicine Community Outreach program. This includes the services which are offered to nine area high schools and Muskegon Community College, the support relationship with the Muskegon Fury, and the various community activities including running and bicycle races, athletic medicine educational seminars, and other community sporting events. Mike has spoken to local, state, regional, and national groups, on various sports medicine, athletic training, and leadership topics. He has served as an Approved Clinical Instructor (ACI) and an adjunct faculty member in the Athletic Training Education Program at Grand Valley State University since 1995. Mike also served as a volunteer athletic trainer for the 4-time National Championship Grand Valley State University football team.
Mike has been involved in numerous state, national, and international athletic events. He served as an athletic trainer for the East West Ambassadors of Baseball in July 1995, in which he traveled to Puerto Rico with four American baseball teams. In June 1997 he was selected to participate in the USOC Sports Medicine program, where he spent two weeks at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, CO as a volunteer athletic trainer. As a result, Mike was selected to travel with the United States Men's Volleyball team on a tour to France.
In the summer of 1998, Mike was invited to serve as a member of the medical staff for the Goodwill Games in New York City. He was assigned to Women's Gymnastics and Figure Skating. Mike then was selected to serve with the medical staff at the 1999 Pan American Games held in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, where he once again worked with Men's Volleyball. His international experience culminated at the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney, Australia. Mike spent 16 weeks as the athletic trainer for the US Men's National Volleyball team. During that time he traveled with them to Brazil and the Netherlands, along with shorter trips throughout the United States. He also spent a substantial amount of time at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, where the Volleyball team is based. While in Sydney, Mike also assisted in the US Medical Clinic.
Mike has been involved nationally in athletic training education by serving on various committees of the National Athletic Trainers' Association Board of Certification.
Mike resides in Whitehall with his wife, Tera and their Golden Retriever, Brady and cat Grayson. Due to his love of sports, his active lifestyle as an avid runner and bicyclist, and his vast athletic training and sports medicine experience, Mike is a tremendous asset to our medical and physically active community.
