Athletic Medicine and Rehabilitation
Kathy Romkema, A.T.,C., P.T.A.
Kathy is a Certified Athletic Trainer and Physical Therapist Assistant who joined Hackley Rehab & Sports Medicine in 2000 with 10 years of clinical experience. She is a 1989 graduate of Grand Valley State University where she earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Health Science with an emphasis in Athletic Training, and a minor in Chemistry. Kathy received her degree as a Physical Therapist Assistant in 2002 from Baker College. She served as the athletic trainer at Orchard View High School from 1991 to 2000 and North Muskegon High School since 2000. Kathy has completed additional coursework in Aquatherapy and currently is responsible for the treatment and rehabilitation of patients at the Hackley Rehab and Aquatic Therapy Center. She also assists in providing athletic training services to area schools.
Kathy was a standout athlete at Comstock High School in Kalamazoo, a perennial volleyball state power. She earned 8 varsity letters competing in basketball, volleyball, and softball, and was named All-Wolverine Conference twice in volleyball and softball. She also earned All-City honors in both volleyball and softball, and Honorable Mention All-State in volleyball. She played on the USA Kalamazoo Junior Olympic team in 1984, which finished 4th in the Junior Olympic National Tournament.
While at GVSU, Kathy played both volleyball and softball. In volleyball, she played outside hitter on the Grand Valley GLIAC championship team in 1985. That team also won a berth in the NCAA Division II Regional Tournament, where they lost to the eventual National Champion, Nebraska - Omaha, in the Regional Championship match.
Kathy resides in North Muskegon with her husband Jon, their children, Patrick and Megan, and two Rat Terriers, Maggie and Coco. Her hobbies include reading, crossword puzzles, computers, walking her dogs, spending time with family and friends, and she is becoming an avid golfer. With her vast athletic training, rehab, and sports experience, Kathy is a tremendous asset to our medical and athletic community.
