Conquering Cancer with Compassionate Care

Quality cancer care is about effective medicine. But it's also about hope, confidence, comfort and dignity. The Cancer Center at Hackley Hospital believes in this vision, and we've developed patient and family services to match.

Convenient and Close to Home
Our dedicated outpatient Cancer Center is big enough to showcase an array of sophisticated services, yet small enough for patients to navigate easily and comfortably. The Cancer Center conveniently clusters physician offices, mammography services, chemotherapy infusion stations, radiation therapy equipment and a computer-equipped information resource center for patients and family. Laboratory and radiology services are just down the hall, as is our inpatient cancer unit.

Knowledgeable, Caring Staff
Our staff works diligently to maintain a friendly, warm and patient-focused atmosphere. This includes expediting any necessary testing in order to reduce stress. Our expert team consists of board-certified medical oncologists, board-certified radiation oncologists, clinical nurse practitioners specializing in oncology, oncology-certified and advanced oncology-certified nurses, certified radiation therapists, registered dietitians and masters-level clinical social workers.

Confidence-Inspiring Affiliations and Accreditations
Hackley Hospital is accredited by the American College of Surgeons as a Community Hospital Comprehensive Cancer Program an approval highly valued among cancer care providers. Our accreditations also include the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO) and the American College of Radiation Oncology.

Connecting Mind and Body
Cancer patients face unique demands on their courage, perseverance and optimism. Paying attention to their emotional and spiritual needs makes a difference. We encourage this on a daily basis through our interactions with patients as well as through many support groups and special people such as our dedicated oncology social workers. We also embrace mind-body therapies such as the West Michigan Healers, a group that uses therapeutic touch to help cancer patients relax, manage pain and reduce fatigue.

Providing a Continuum of Care
Cancer patients can receive continuing care and support at home through the Hackley Health family of care; home health services, hospice, medical equipment, physical therapy and pain management services.

Prevention, Education and Outreach
The Cancer Center leads and supports several major prevention, education and outreach initiatives. Many outreach efforts target the cancer sites most prevalent here and nationally lung, breast and prostate.

The Hackley Cancer Registry
Our cancer registry, established in 1953, tracks diagnostic and survival trends in our community. With our updated reference date of January 1, 1983, we have now collected data on over 9,100 individuals diagnosed with cancer in the surrounding area.

Prevention and Awareness
We're committed to raising cancer awareness and encouraging healthy lifestyles. Annual education programs feature panel discussions or lectures by cancer experts. Our free health fairs provide screenings, demonstrations and cancer risk assessments.

Research on Prevention
We also participate in major prevention-focused research studies. This includes the largest-ever nationwide prostate cancer prevention study to learn whether the trace mineral selenium and vitamin E protect against prostate cancer. We also enroll participants in the NSABP (National Surgical Adjuvant Breast and Bowel Project), and STAR (Study of Tamoxifen and Raloxifene) both cancer prevention studies. These efforts help Hackley Hospital bring premier cancer care to West Michigan's Lakeshore.
