Memory Clinic

Introduction

It is estimated that four million people in the United States have this disease, yet it is difficult to diagnose with certainty. There are as many as 70 medical diagnoses which can explain memory loss. Many of these are treatable.

If your loved one is suffering from Alzheimers Disease, we will help you by providing support and information.

What is Alzheimers Screening?
Watching a loved one experience memory loss, confusion or depression is a painful experience. When these symptoms begin to interfere with activities and relationships, it is important to understand the cause.

The West Michigan Alzheimers Screening Program was established in 1983 to provide answers to families, physicians and other professionals who are involved with adults.

Physicians specializing in neurology, psychologists, social workers, nurses and other Hackley medical personnel meet with the older adult and his/her family to evaluate physical, psychological and emotional functioning.

Also, lab tests, EEGs, X-rays, CT scans and MRIs are completed, as needed, to assist in diagnosis. The Screening Program team combines the results of the interviews and tests to reach conclusions about the changes experienced by the patient.

These conclusions are communicated to the individual experiencing problems, the family and the primary physician.

What will happen when I visit?
You can expect to have two visits. Throughout these sessions, the older adult and family members are interviewed extensively. A detailed questionnaire is to be completed prior to entering the program.

The first session focuses on the evaluation itself. The second visit involves a team meeting, whereby the Alzheimer's screening professionals meet with the patient and family to go over recommendations and information about community resources.

How do I schedule an appointment?
To schedule an appointment, simply call Central Scheduling at 231-728-4092. To learn more about the program, you may call 231-728-5868. Someone will be available to speak with you from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. every Monday, Tuesday and Thursday.

You may be referred by your physician or you may initiate the referral yourself. If you or your family make the referral on your own, we will contact your family doctor.

Will insurance cover the cost?
Medicare and many secondary insurances cover most or all of the fees for the evaluation. This will be discussed with you at the time of your appointment.
