Multiple Drug Resistant Organisms
If you are known to have a multiple drug resistant organism (MRSA, VRE, or other type resistant organism), please notify the doctor or nurse. Contact precautions are used by healthcare workers to prevent the spread of these grems. Visitors are to follow the same posted precautions.
Pneumococcal/Influenza Vaccines
These are two very important safe vaccines that protect you from serious diseases.
They will be provided to you during your hospital stay if you qualify. Influenza
vaccine is given September through January every flu season; pneumococcal vaccine
is given year around. Your nurse will give you the vaccine information statements
to answer questions you may have. This is an opportune time to get
vaccinated.
Respiratory Hygiene / Cough Etiquette:
- Cover your nose/mouth when coughing or sneezing
- Ask for a mask or put one on when asked by staff to do so
- Use tissues to contain your respiratory secretions and dispose of them in a waste container
- Perform hand hygiene with alcohol sanitizer or soap and water
Standard Precautions:
- Standard Precautions are usual measures that healthcare workers take to reduce the risk of spreading germs. Associates may wear gloves, a gown, a mask and protective eyewear depending on procedures they are performing.
- Hand hygiene is very important for you, your visitors and associates. Use of alcohol based waterless hand rub is the preferred choice for cleaning the hands when not visibly soiled. We encourage the use of it for everyone before and after patient contact.
- Soap and water must be used only when hands are visibly soiled, before eating and after use of the restroom.
- Please observe all other precautions posted on patient doors.
- Do not be afraid to remind any healthcare worker, including your doctors and nurses, to clean their hands.
- Visitors should use hand sanitizer before going home.
- Contact with the HIV virus (AIDS virus) and multiple drug resistant organisms is of great concern to everyone. The State of Michigan has enacted a law that authorizes an HIV blood test on a patient without written consent whenever there has been accidental exposure to blood or body fluids by needle stick, mucous membrane exposure, or open-wound exposure when informed on admission. In the unlikely event that a hospital worker is exposed to your blood or other body fluids and this test is necessary, the results will be placed on your medical record, and you will be informed of any positive results.
NOTE: Wall needle disposal containers are available in each patient room for disposal of needles and syringes. If you or your visitors self-administer medication, such as insulin, please use these containers for discarding the needles to protect everyone from needle punctures.
