Your Hospital Room
Hospital bed:
Our beds, with state-of-the-art surfaces, insure a new level of comfort and versatility for our patients. Two types of specialized mattresses, a 2-part foam mattress located in the Family Birth Place and an air-foam combination called the Active Integrated Response Treatment Surface, which is used throughout the rest of the hospital, provide pressure relief, adjustable length and ease of movement. The bed should remain plugged into the electrical outlet so that it can automatically function in Pressure Relief mode and adjust the air pressure in the appropriate zones. You may be raised at night or during the day if you are resting, recovering from surgery or taking certain medications. Your nurse will assist you in operating your bed.
Room Transfers:
If you feel that your roommate or roommate's visitors are disturbing you, you can request a room transfer. Please contact your nurse and she will make arrangements for you.
Telephone Service:
Telephones are provided in each room. Your hospital room phone number is 727-4 (plus the room number). Local and toll-free calls may be made at any time from the room by dialing 9 and the number.
Long Distance Calling:
Calls to Grand Haven and Spring Lake are not long distance and can be dialed direct from a patient room. It is not necessary to dial "1", but the area code "616" must be used.
All other long distance calls must be made with a phone card, or by calling collect. Long distance calls cannot be charged to your room.
Phone cards are available for sale in the Hackley Hospital Gift Shop at the cost of $5 for 50 minutes. The Gift Shop is open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., Saturday from 11:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., and Sunday from 1 to 4 p.m.
Nurse Call System:
A button to call your nurse is located at your bedside. When you press the button, the nursing station is signaled that you need assistance. A staff member will respond to your signal as soon as possible.
TV / Radio / and Videos:
Color television sets with cable are provided free of charge for each room. Please be considerate of other patients by playing the television softly and turning the set off at bedtime.
Volunteer Services has a TV/VCR and a variety of movies available to help you pass the time. Call Volunteer Services at extension 4654 and a list of available movies will be sent up to your room. This equipment is available starting at 8:00 a.m. and must be returned by 3:30 p.m. We regret that this equipment cannot be out overnight.

Personal Belongings:
You may bring your own personal hygiene items, pajamas, bathrobe and slippers. Excess clothing and unnecessary items should be sent home with a family member.
Patients are not allowed to bring in any electrical devices unless it is a medical pump. This includes hair dryers, DVD / CD players, MP3 players, laptop computers and electric razors. Please leave these devices at home as they may not meet hospital regulations and may interfer with hospital equipment.
We advise that you leave all credit cards, valuables, jewelry and money over $5 at home. If you chose to keep your valuables with you, please leave them in a safe deposit with the Security Office. The office phone number is 728-4710.
If you choose to keep your valuables or large sums of money with you in the hospital, it will be at your own risk.
Mail, Packages, and Newspapers:
Mail, flowers and packages are delivered to your patients' rooms every day by our dedicated staff of volunteers. Cards are sorted and delivered in the morning. If you are discharged before mail is delivered to you, we will make every effort to forward the mail to your home. If the mail is undeliverable to you, it will be returned to the sender.
Flowers are delivered by our volunteers every day between 8:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. If flowers arrive for you after you have been discharged, the florist will be contacted to pick them back up and make the necessary arrangements for delivery. Select Specialty and ICU patients can only receive silk flowers in their room. If real flowers are sent, they will be delivered to the nurses station for the family to take home. Only mylar balloons are allowed in the hospital. Latex balloons are not permitted.
Note: If you have opted for a "No Information" status on your room during your stay, flowers, mail and packages will be undeliverable to you. This status prohibits the transfer of incoming phone calls, mail delivery, flowers or visitors. No details are released about patients who request "No Information" status. You are encouraged to discuss questions regarding communication about your hospitalization with your nurse.
Newspaper:
The Muskegon Chronicle will be delivered daily to your room free of charge. The Detroit News, Detroit Free Press, Grand Rapids Press and USA Today are available in pay boxes at the Main Entrance of the hospital. Monday through Friday volunteers are available and can get one for you. To contact Volunteer Services from your hospital room call extension 4654.
